Getting started
What is Grimshackle?
Grimshackle is a collection of free, browser-based tools for tabletop RPG game masters. There are four Grimshackle tools today: Battlesmith builds encounters and stat blocks, Tavernwright generates taverns and NPCs, Shoppekeep creates shops and merchants, and Rollstones rolls 3D dice. All four share one look and support D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, and Daggerheart.
Who is Grimshackle for?
Grimshackle is built for game masters and dungeon masters of every experience level, from a first session to a hundredth. If you run tabletop RPGs such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, or Daggerheart and would rather improvise at the table than spend your week on prep, Grimshackle's tools are made for you.
Is Grimshackle free?
Yes, Grimshackle is completely free. Every Grimshackle tool is free to use in full, with no trial timer, no paywalled features, and no premium tier. Grimshackle also has no ads.
Do I need an account or to sign up?
No, Grimshackle does not require an account. There is no sign-up, no login, and no email to provide — you can open any Grimshackle tool in your browser and start using it in seconds.
Games & licensing
Which game systems does Grimshackle support?
Grimshackle's tools support three game systems: D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, and Daggerheart. Rollstones, the Grimshackle dice roller, works with any tabletop RPG system.
Can I switch game systems inside Grimshackle?
Yes, you can switch game systems inside Grimshackle's tools. Where a tool offers a system switch, its numbers and stat blocks re-calculate to match the system you choose — the same cast or encounter, restated correctly for D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, or Daggerheart.
Is Grimshackle official or affiliated with the publishers?
No, Grimshackle is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any game publisher. Grimshackle is built on openly licensed content: D&D under the OGL and CC-BY 4.0 (SRD 5.1), Pathfinder 2e under the OGL v1.0a and ORC License, and Daggerheart under the Darrington Press Community Gaming License.
Your data & where it runs
Is my data private?
Yes, your data on Grimshackle is private. Your taverns, shops, encounters, and dice sets are saved locally in your own browser — not on Grimshackle's servers. There is no login and nothing syncing to a cloud you don't control.
Does Grimshackle work offline?
Grimshackle's tools run entirely in your browser, so once a tool has loaded it keeps working even if your internet connection drops mid-session — handy for basements, cabins, and convention halls with unreliable Wi-Fi.
Does Grimshackle work on mobile?
Yes, Grimshackle works on mobile. Every Grimshackle tool is built to run on a desktop behind the screen and on a phone or tablet at the far end of the table.
Do I need to install anything?
No, Grimshackle requires no installation. There is nothing to download; each Grimshackle tool opens as a web page in any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.
Running the game
Will Grimshackle replace my prep or creativity?
No, Grimshackle is not meant to replace your prep or creativity. Grimshackle takes away the mundane busywork — the stat blocks, the price lists, the on-the-spot NPC names — and hands the creative, epic parts of running a game back to you.
Can I use Grimshackle live during a session, or on stream?
Yes, you can use Grimshackle live during a session or on stream. Grimshackle's tools are designed for real-time use at the table — whether you're playing in person, running a game online, or streaming to an audience. Improvise the tavern your players wandered into and keep the night moving.
Do Grimshackle's tools work together?
Yes, Grimshackle's tools are designed to work together across a single evening. Each tool stands on its own, but you can set the scene in Tavernwright, stat the fight in Battlesmith, spend the spoils in Shoppekeep, and settle every roll in Rollstones — one consistent look and the same three systems throughout.
What each one does
What is Battlesmith?
Battlesmith is Grimshackle's encounter and stat-block builder. You type a few creature names and Battlesmith returns full, playable stat blocks — HP, conditions, spells, gear, and loot — with board, initiative-rail, and full-detail views for running the fight live in D&D 5e, Pathfinder 2e, or Daggerheart. Open Battlesmith →
What is Tavernwright?
Tavernwright is Grimshackle's tavern and NPC generator. One click builds a whole room — a sign, a full menu, plot hooks, and a cast of NPCs with names, faces, voices, secrets, motives, and stat blocks — and lets you map their relationships on a drag-and-drop board. Open Tavernwright →
What is Shoppekeep?
Shoppekeep is Grimshackle's fantasy shop and merchant generator with a working point-of-sale. Shoppekeep creates a named shop, a shopkeeper with personality, and priced shelves drawn from real SRD catalogs, then runs buying, selling, and haggling with a live merchant till. Open Shoppekeep →
What is Rollstones?
Rollstones is Grimshackle's 3D dice roller. It rolls a full set of true 3D dice — coin, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and d100 — that tumble across a tray, land, and total themselves. You can customize the dice with 21 finishes, 9 colors, and 5 dice-box linings, and roll up to 24 dice at once. Open Rollstones →
